No cancer risk among users of oral contraceptives
Philip J Hannaford and colleagues - 12 September 2007
Taking the contraceptive pill does not increase a woman's chances of developing cancer and may even reduce the risk for most women. This a the conclusion of researchers who analysed UK cohort data spanning a 36 year period from the Royal College of General Practitioners' oral contraception study, which began in 1968.
The accompanying editorial by Olav Meirik and Timothy M M Farley makes the point that that in a developed country with an effective cervical cancer screening programme, the pill is a safe contraceptive method with respect to cancer. In some developing countries - with inadequate cervical cancer screening and healthcare services, and high cervical cancer rates - the balance of cancer risk is probably less favourable.
